Chapter 7: Databases and Data Sources
3. Select the appropriate type from the drop-down. The various types are briefly
discussed in the table below.
4. Refer to Help > OpenOffice.org Help for information on registering particular
database types. Check the Index for Database Wizard.
Select from the following database types (depending on the operating system):
Database type Meaning
Adabas A slightly scaled-down version of the well-known relational database
system. Adabas is installed with its own setup program. (See
http://www.softwareag.com/adabasd/)
JDBC Link to databases contacted via a JDBC driver.
ODBC Link to databases contacted via an ODBC driver.
dBase Files can be edited directly with the driver for direct access in the file
system.
ADO Link to databases contacted via the ADO driver.
Text Register text files, such as comma-separated CSV files (read-only).
Spreadsheet One can register OpenOffice.org Calc and MS Excel spreadsheets (read-
only).
Address Book This address book driver allows the user to register the system address
book or another address book source (read-only). It also ensures that data
fields are correctly assigned to the templates provided with
OpenOffice.org, in form letters, for example.
Address Books
Registering an Address Book
As seen in the table above, an OpenOffice.org database can connect to an external address
book. Available address books include Mozilla, Thunderbird, LDAP and certain operating
system address books.
OpenOffice.org templates and Wizards, such as the letter and mail merge wizards, use fields
that can represent the contents of an address book. When the document is connected to the
data source, the general fields used in the templates are replaced by the actual fields from the
data source.
While an actual Base database allows more flexibility, the data is still read only. Because of
this, OpenOffice.org allows one to register address books as data sources.
Using the Wizard to import an Address Book
Select File > Wizards > Address Data Source. This Wizard is described in Help.
Manually Registering an Existing Address Book
1. Choose File > Templates > Address Book Source. The Templates: Address Book
Assignment dialog appears.
